Is there a way to test a heater core to make sure its working right and the water pump?

I have had a problem with my 1993 mitsubishi eclipse everyday i have to add at least 1/2 a container of antifreeze and the temperature guage goes way up then slowly goes down. Sometimes i have to turn the heat on to get the temperature down. I changed the radiator and thermostat. There seems to be no leaks anywhere. The only other things i have not changed is the heater core and the water pump. Is there a way to test the heater core and water pump?

there are 2 ways to check the heater core. first make sure it,s not leaking on the floor then warm your car up and feel the heater hoses. both heater hoses should feel hot. if only 1 is hot then it needs flushed out. to test the water pump is leave the cap off, start your car and as soon as the thermostat opens see if it,s circulating.

Testing the heater core is you turn the heater on and if you don't smell antifreeze or have a damp floor mat on the passenger front side, the core is fine.

Water pump, start with cold engine, open radiator cap and fill with coolant, turn engine on leaving cap off, when it gets warmed up, you should see coolant flowing passed the radiator opening, if the water pump is ok.
