My 1999 taurus lost heat last year. Freeze plugs needed replaced. So I had no radiator fluid. Check fluid.

Let's tackle your rear window defrost. Interestingly, it's controlled by two relays. Rear Window Defrost Relay #1 in the Smart Junction box controls Rear Window Defrost Relay #2 in the Relay Center Box. Relay #1 would also turn on your outside mirror heaters as well.

Relay #1 is controlled by Fuse 2.27 in the Smart Junction Box under your dash.

Relay #2 is controlled by Fuse 2.07 in the Smart Junction Box under your dash.

The Switch that turns on the Rear defogger is controlled by Fuse 2.19 in the Smart Junction Box under your dash.

The Rear Window Defrost Grid is controlled by Fuse 1.11 in the Battery Junction Box under the hood next to your battery.

So, it's not just ONE fuse you need to check, it's FOUR!.

More likely, somone forgot to correctly plug in the connectors when they put the dash back together. That would account for no heat too...

Probably a vacuum leak, or a malfunctioning vacuum valve. Some cars have a valve in the coolant line leading into the heater core, but I'm pretty sure Taurus' don't have those. Does the HVAC system blow any air?
