How do i change a heater core into my pontiac grand am?
my advice would be to get a chiltons auto repair guide for the specific type of car you have. They can be found at auto zone/advance/pepboys etc.. They have step by step instructions for things like that. Heater cores can be difficult, so it helps to have the book handy

drain coolant

remove heater hoses and the little drain elbow from the out side of the car underneath towards the center of the fire wall.

remove cover from the bottom of the dash on Both sides of the center console

remove the floor vent from the center of the dash

remove the cover there are 6 or 7 screws in the cover there are two towards the fire wall that are pain in the but to get and one that is about one inch from the passanger side of the cover if you don't remove that one, and it's hidden very well the box cover will break

remove the straps from the heater core pull down and towards the back of the car.

If you get this far installation is reverse of removal If your not uses to doing this sort of work you will spend more money at a chiropractor then paying the mechanic to do it.

Good Luck
first you need to go get a good repair manual on t,,i can tell you some of it,,but your going to need a good manual also,,you almost have to remove the dash in the car to get the heater box out of it,,and actually its easier if you do remove it part of the way on it,,i own a repair shop, and do this for a living,,its not an easy job,,even for me,,but its going to take you a while to get it done, just get the manual it tells more than i can explain on here,,good luck,i hope this help,s.
As in all jobs that require a bit of work under the dash, remove the front passenger seat and driver's to if it's in the way. Only takes pulling 4 bolts and a connector or two. Then you can lay down pretty comfortably and not spill your beer.

That is a tough question to answer......go to autozone and get a copy of Chiltons repair manual for this vehicle...it will tell you how to change the heater core....Chiltons will cover the model and year you have....or have a good mechanic do it.....heater cores are not that expensive, maybe 50-80 dollars.....do you really want to do this job....replacing a h/c is only required once in the lifetime of most vehicles.

nope thats about the only way bub.
First off what is the year make and model of the vehicle?

Second, sadly the answer is no on most newer cars and trucks the heater core is located inside a unit inside the dash area that controls the air flow inside the vehicle, its not impossible to do this job but its often easier and quicker to have a professional mechanic do it as there will be less chance of damage to other components.
Since this is in the Dodge section assume you are talking about a Dodge. You didn't say what kind, but doesn't matter, I have said for years %26quot;half%26quot; jokingly that the first thing down the assembly line is the heater core and the rest of the car is built around it. Of course that is not %26quot;totally true%26quot; but on some cars you would sure think so. This depends solely on how old of a Dodge you have. The newer the worse off you are. Some of the real old ones like Dodge Charger in the 60's and early 70's had the entire under dash unit with heater and ac condenser that would come out with just a few bolts from under the hood. Other than that most any modern one is a real bear. These so-called engineers have to know that this stands a good change of having to be done at one point or other. Change one in a Dodge pickup or certain years and once the Dashboard is out in the yard and everything underneath it you will %26quot;swear%26quot; that the truck was built around that part first. :-) Good news though is that you can do this yourself if you simply set aside a day to do it without interruptions. One of them took us 9 hours of solid work but most can be done in much less time on most vehicles. Good Luck!

Take out the glovebox and open the hood. Go buy the new heater core and look for it along the firewall where 2 heater hoses go inside the cab to the glovebox area. unclamp the hoses and replace. It's not too bad a job. However, I will pray for quick healing on your knuckles.

you will need to buy a manuel, Chilton or Haynes both make them and they are available at your local jobber. it is complicated and it is different for trucks with AC. and it is done from the floor under the dash.
