How hard is it to do a bypass? How is is it done? Step-by step method. I am a change oil and filter guy and not a mechanic.

The radiator shop wants $500 to replace the heater core. I would like to keep the Jeep for pulling a pop-up camper.
How to Bypass 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater Core?
Well, 500 bucks to change the heater core is not too bad, considering the entire dashboard has to be removed to get to it.

Anyhow, it's real simple to bypass the heater. You can't block the flow - it has to always be circulating. Just cut the 2 hoses entering and exiting the firewall with a utility knife and connect them together with a coupler and clamps.

Before you bypass the heater, check that the problem isn't with one of those connections at the firewall. I had leaking antifreeze coming into the passenger side and the shop told me the core was bad and wanted 700-800 to replace it. I decided to do it myself. Bought a core for 79.00. Then started taking things apart. I noticed that one of the hose clamps was loose and was squirting water into the core when the engine ran. Put a new clamp on it and no more leak!Harlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-7774872284958145962011-10-06T23:17:00.001-04:002011-10-06T23:17:12.961-04:00HOW DO I CHANGE THE HEATER CORE ON A 1989 CHEVY CAVILIER?Located in the center lower portion of the dash panel. I also smell syrupy antifreeze smell in the truck at times.

I do have another explanation for the smell though. I changed all the hoses myself and leaked coolant everywhere under the hood. Then I didnt get them tight enough and they leaked. The truck overheated cause I had air in the system and cooked the thermostat. I had it replaced and the hoses tightened. The truck still runs hot (but not overheat) at times.

Could it be the heater core?
How do I check the heater core on an 87 ranger?
i mechanic for a living,,and the only good way to check one is remove it,,and do a pressure check on it,while its under water,,if it leaks then its bad,,i have done a few this way just to narrow it down,,but from what you said about it getting hot,it could be other things causing it,id go back over it,,and check everything,,,and make sure the radiator is not clogged up,,they,ll get gunk built up in the bottom of them,,and it will cause them to heat up sometimes,,other than that,,you,ll have to re-check everything,,if it got hot enough,,it might have blown a head gasket,,it is possible,,,just check it,,or have it pressure checked to see if its ok,,and go from there,,good luck hope this help,s.
How do I check the heater core on an 87 ranger?
Could be, but you likely blew your head gasket or warped the head when you overheated it. If there is no coolant in the passenger floorboard, it probably isn't the heater core.
Sounds like your heater core is leaching coolant which may not show up as an actual wet floor type leak. You could temporarily disconnect the two heater hoses at the firewall and hook them directly together so that the heater core was totally disconnected. Then if the smell and oil deposits on the inside of the windshield did not return (after cleaning the inside of the windshield), you know you likely have a bad heater core. Don't try to repair it, just replace it with a new heater core.
You may want to make sure the right thermostat was put in. Some places put a lower torque springed thermostat in vehicles so the owner will have to keep bringing it back due to slight overheating. Your manual should tell you what type of thermostat is needed.

If it stills causes problems then you may have busted a head gasket. Which you can tell by looking around the head to see if you see any leaks coming from around the seal.

Also if you want to check the heater core you will have to take most of the dash board off and all of the glove box to access it. Just because you dont have anti-freeze in the floor bored doesnt mean the heater core is still good. In some vehicles the components can be very warm and vaperate the liquid which in case would put a thin film on the inside of your window that is hard to get off. By looking at the window if you to have a film, the vaporized anti-freeze will give your window a rainbow looking affect.Harlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-81553201129019540602011-10-06T23:16:00.003-04:002011-10-06T23:16:57.104-04:00Need the procedure to change the heater core on a '65 mustang? This is not a difficult core to change, especially in a non A/C car as most '65's were. My best advise is to obtain a manual or go to the library and read up if they have an old Motor's or Chilton's manual for it. The other thing you might want to look at while there is the vent box condition as these cars have a history of rust caused water leaks from the vent intake. This would be easier to fix both at the same time while you are there. Get a repair manual. The dash will have to come out. It will actually be easier than trying to figure out how to do it with the dash in place.
Do i need to take off my dashboard in order to change the heater core in an 88 mustang?
Possibly, but usually accessible from under the dash, but you have to lay on your back a lot. Unhook the hoses from under the hood first.
Do i need to take off my dashboard in order to change the heater core in an 88 mustang?
Its supposed to come out, but it can sometimes be achieved by just taking some of the bolts ot and some loose then pull it back far enough to reach in and grab it. Becarefull not to break the dash.
I had a 1988 GT. There is no if, ands, buts, or maybes about this. The entire dash has to come out to get to that heater core. Don't use the replacement pieces from Ford, Autozone, or Advance. They are all garbage. Use the replacement part from NAPA %26amp; be sure you get restrictors for the new piece.
If you do not have factory air conditioning then then you remove the glove compartment door and there will be enough room to remove the heater core,if there is factory air conditioning then the entire dash will need removal and the AC needs to be drained on some models and the steering column dropped to the seat.It is around a 4-5 hour job.Harlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-87071698368146169372011-10-06T23:16:00.001-04:002011-10-06T23:16:40.945-04:00Someone changed a heater core in my 92 firebird. it keeps dieing. is there vacume lines behind dash?i took off dash. but cant find any vacume lines.
Someone changed a heater core in my 92 firebird. it keeps dieing. is there vacume lines behind dash?
There are vacuum lines in the dash, but if your not getting any heat, check the cables that operate the blend air doors. I was told by a local garage the heater core itself was only available from Chevy and cost $300! Does this sound right? Thanks.
Heater core in Chevy Tracker?
Changing the heater core on a '00 Tracker is moderately difficult. To do it right you must remove the entire dash pan (just like a Ford), but besides that it's easy. The problem with removing the dash pan is the you will probably never get all the rattling out after you reinstall in. As far as getting the core you local parts store should be able to get it for you. You can go to www.advanceautoparts.com or www.autozone.com and check on-line to make sure. If they can get it and you don't mind using used parts go to www.junkyarddog.com (it will link you national salvage yards) good luck.
Heater core in Chevy Tracker?
contact buy-oem-parts for the best price on the partHarlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-61682532700554078802011-09-23T22:02:00.006-04:002011-09-23T22:02:59.378-04:00How do you remove the heater core from a 92 eagle premier?its overheating...

i changed the water pump and flushed the radiator..

i guess the heater core is next but dont know how to get it out,
How do you remove the heater core from a 92 eagle premier?
Hi , If it isn't leaking don't go there yet. Is it leaking or are you just not getting heat. If it is not leaking and it is a heat issue the problem can usually be resolved with out having to replace the core. An air pocket in the heater core will prevent it from producing heat, so will any blockage. Peel back the carpeting (it should only be velcroed) look for a box approximately 10x7. ahhh...screw this go get a hayes manual $5.00 or free at your library.
The heater core is in the center of the dash up and right of the gas petal it sucks all u need is a 1/4 inch ratchet set with a few extensions and a few swivels u have to take off the outside where your vent lines run to and that reveals the heater core the u remove your heater hose from the firewall in the engine compartment then u go back under the dash and undo the heater core straps, remove and replace i did one on a 96 Berretta and it was a pain took about 3 hours...mostley all ove the tiny bolts are 8mmHarlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-91931439263090705102011-09-23T22:01:00.002-04:002011-09-23T22:01:30.439-04:00Help with a heater core?I have a 96 mercury sabel wagon. is it hard to change the heater core. when you turn on the heat it blows warm air for about 2 to 5 seconds and then turns to cold air. can any one help. thanks
Help with a heater core?
temp valve in the hose is bad, or heater door closing due to vacuum leak or bad vacuum motor.
Help with a heater core?
did you try flushing the cooling sytem first its too much trouble to change the heater core since the dash will have to be loweredHarlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-57281731682018306452011-09-23T22:01:00.001-04:002011-09-23T22:01:19.560-04:001989 Chevy Corsica V6 Heater Core?Where and how do i change th heater core .. My heat and A/c doesnt work well A/c never worked heater did when i first got car..I already got put in a temp thingy and heater still doesnt work not to worried about A/c but would be nice if it did work :) every once in awhile i smell a hint of radatitor fluid on passengers side ..
1989 Chevy Corsica V6 Heater Core?
If the heater core isn't leaking, it isn't bad.

You may have a problem with the flapper doors in the ducting. This car may have a valve to control the water going thru the heater core as well.
1989 Chevy Corsica V6 Heater Core?
u need to be on pimp my ride or somethin, but for real, go to a chop shop
well,if the core is on the pass side then replace.if on drivers side-ouch!-trade it in.
That's a tough chore, you have to just about remove your dashboard from the car to get to the thing. First thing you'll need is a haynes or chilton's manual. then remove the bolts securing the dasto the firewall on the passenger side of the car, next drop the duct work in front of the heater core, then drain the radiator fluid from the car. remove the lines from the heater core at the fire wall, remove the core, replace, reconnect the lines, refill the radiator, replace the duct work, and reinstall the dash, make sure you don't break any wires or lines connecting the duct controls. Sounds easy right? Good Luck. A shop will usually charge around $250- $400 It will take you a solid day, you will cuss a lot, and God himself will turn his back on yo for weeks becuse of the things you will say about him. If you or some one you know is hndy you can try this. Go to an auto parts store and buy a tube of radiator stop leak, (wait for the good part) you will also need a drill operated fluid transfer pump, a cheap one is about $20 bucks, some hose that is the same size as the in and out on your core, and some HOT water. Hook the bottom line to your core, and to the pump on the drill, take the HOT water mixed with stop leak and pour it into the hose hooked to the core, put it on the pump. Turn the drill on and circulate it for as long as you care to or until no water leaks from the core (you may burn up the drill) Then flush it with clean water and reconnect the system. I say do this the hard way because I don't advocate putting metal flakes into your cars coolings system, which could potentially foul up something that isn't a problem now, It might cost $75 but could save you $300.Harlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-732862429892493501.post-9705695836907774682011-09-23T22:01:00.000-04:002011-09-23T22:01:10.047-04:00How do i change a heater core in a 1979 gmc?Truck or car? Suggest if they are both hot with the engine up to operating temperature then the problem is likely in the heater damper control system. As a point of interest, even with a faulty thermostat, you should normally still get SOME heat out of the heater. Please be reminded that checking coolant levels on a hot engine can cause severe scalding to self and others, and this is why this should be done with the engine cooled down completely.
Did you cross the heater hoses? Maybe you have air lock in the cooling system or the heater control valve is not working properly
Here's a few suggestions when dealing with heat or heater core issues.

No1 test the anti-freeze with a anti-freeze tester that most Wally Marts etc carry for around 8 bucks or so.I f the tester and the coolants colour indicates it's worn out or dirty change the coolant in the vehicle by using the rad's drain plug , adding water steadily and reflushing the rad till it basically comes out as water mostly, then add the coolant mixture.Make sure unless you live in the very severe coldest climates not to really mix the anti-freeze and water more then 50/50 or to about -45, plus don't dump coolant on the ground it's sweet taisting to animals and will kill dogs and cats etc.

No2 Once proper coolant mixtures and levels have been established cold start up the engine with no blower motors on at all then squeeze the top rad rose or thermostat house.

If no pressure builds up within a few mins or the engine has reached it's normal warm up temperatures then more likely the thermostat isn't the right one for the engine or that season of the year or the thermostat is warn or faulty.be sure you check the vehicle under the hood and underneath the vehicle for any leaks , from the engine or any of the rad hoses or rad or even the over flow container etc ,

No3 if the pressure builds up and no leaks then as the engine is still idling listen and watch from a safe distance for the fan to enage as you realize the hose, plus go into the vehicle and set the heat on high with full blower motor on. Then go back under the hood and reach up to the two smaller heater core hoses and feel them are they both getting hot , check the temperature gage to see what the engines temperature range is at and go back to see if the fan has engaged or the two hoses are hot.

If only one of the heater core hoses is only hot then that indicates that the heater core maybe clogged or faulty or that there is a air lock in the heater core unit's system. If the fan never engages with engine fairly worm or hot check the rad fan's fuse under the hood in fuse box and the fan relay, plus check the temperature sensor and rad plug in connections, plus visually check the wires for damages or if their fray or bare or burnt etc.

No4 with blower motor on high still doors closed is there any scent coming from the venting system that is irrating if so the heater core is faulty and requires replacement, plus if you turn the windhield defroster on high does a scum or a greasy type of stuff appear on vehicles interior part of the windshield, if so again it says heater core needs replacing asap.

No5 If the two hoses did get hot or say not hot enough then you may require a better temperature range of thermostat or the heater core maybe slightly clogged etc.

No6 if you suspect the heater core is clogged or air blocked then with the engine cold all coolant levels at the proper levels , disconnect the two small heater core hoses , switch the two hoses around and be extra cautious bec the shafts that hold the hoses onto the heater core are mostly made from plastics.Once their switched around and on firmly start the engine up let idle awhile then turn heater on and allow it to run a few mins while checking the temperature gage in process then shut engine off , allow the engine to cool to a comfortable temperature and switch the two hoses around again and recheck the system again with engine idling. You can also force water or air through the heater cores hose connectors and keep checking once you've flushed the heater core for that nasty scent or that gummy greasy stuff bec if that appears you know the heater core was clogged but isn't anymore and it's no good.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if the vehicle does have a breather valve on the thermostat housing etc open it up once engine is warm and watch for the air bubbles once you see fluid only coming out you probably have most of the air out , but try this a few different times too, plus another way to remove air bubbles is to leave the rad or over flow cap off as it sits running and that will adventually forcing the air out too.
Echo home bedding

some advice about a friend
Harlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08326279678422300197noreply@blogger.com
